Worked example – Suppose you need rock for a 10 ft × 8 ft space that is 12 in deep. Depth in feet = 12 ÷ 12 = 1 ft. Cubic feet = 10 × 8 × 1 = 80 ft³. Cubic yards = 80 ÷ 27 ≈ 2.96 yd³. Approximate tons = 2.96 × 1.4 ≈ 4.15 tons. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, which the calculator applies automatically. Round up to the nearest whole yard for delivery and consider a 5 % buffer for compaction.
