How it works

Cubic feet = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12). A standard bag of garden soil holds about 1.5 cubic feet.

Example

A 4 × 4 ft bed 9 in deep needs 12 cubic feet — about 8 bags.

Frequently asked questions

What soil mix for a raised bed?
A common mix is roughly 60% topsoil, 30% compost and 10% aeration (e.g. perlite). Buy a little extra — soil settles after watering.
